Interdisciplinary Capstones for All Students

Abstract

Every student at Elon University completes an interdisciplinary capstone with a capstone project as the culminating experience of the Elon Core Curriculum. These courses are opportunities for students to integrate and apply what they have learned during the college experience. The capstone also challenges students to consider larger themes of the Core Curriculum – ethical reasoning and personal and social responsibility within local and global communities. This paper offers examples of interdisciplinary capstones across higher education, an overview of Elon’s program, and assessment data showing the perceived learning experience in interdisciplinary capstones to be rated higher than in disciplinary courses.

Jeffrey Scott Coker, Elon University

Jeffrey Scott Coker, Ph.D. and M.Ed., is the Director of the Elon Core Curriculum and Associate Professor of Biology at Elon University.  His research agenda includes pedagogy and outcomes within general education and experiential learning programs (in addition to biological research).  

Evan Gatti, Elon University
Evan A. Gatti, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Art History at Elon University and Associate Director of the Elon Core Curriculum. She teaches courses in Art History, ranging from introductory courses for all students to the disciplinary capstone for the major, as well as an interdisciplinary Core Capstone course called Rome. Her research agenda is focused on medieval art history.
